So I am going to have to take it back. It no longer looks or feels like spring! With 58cm/23in of new snow in the last 7 days and 100% of the terrain still open, winter is here to stay. Whistler Mountain has extended its dates and now closes on the 25th April, instead of the premature date of the 18th – lucky us! Note however that the Creeekside Gondola and Peak to Peak will still be closing on the 18th for yearly repairs. Blackcomb stays open right until May 24th for those keenos out there.
I did fresh tracks last Saturday and was cruising down powder runs before the main crowd hit, beautiful! My friends have been up since and all had reports of great snow conditions. The trees seem to be where it’s at with the visibility fluctuating. Unfortunately I feel a stab of sadness as I can’t help but think of the snowboarder that passed away last week on Khyber terrain, a favourite tree run with thrill seekers. He was alone in out-of-bounds backcountry and my heart stops at the thought of that being a friend. Never ski or board alone, the buddy system is invaluable.
Rates in the village drop and we’re starting to see a few drink and restaurant specials re-surface. Come join us!
