As I begin the second loop of the 5km trail that makes up the 2012 Yeti Snowshoe Race I wonder what I had been thinking. Snowshoe running is tough, but it’s becoming a popular way to keep fit in the snowy winter months. Gear technology has also kept up with the increasing popularity. Gone are the days of tennis rackets strapped to your feet, now you’re looking at a slim 22-inch snowshoe specifically designed for running. Even though they only weigh about a pound you do have to correct your running stance to allow for the added diameter. While you run your body also has to adjust to the snowpack underfoot and depending on the terrain this can mean engaging your whole body to stabilize yourself, making it a great workout.
